Marriage, that honored institution, refers to the union between two individuals who pledge to share their lives and responsibilities. It’s an emotional, physical, and spiritual bond, typically between a man and a woman. Sharing life often involves having kids, which can deepen the bond while simultaneously introducing a slew of shared responsibilities, challenges, and joys. But let’s be honest—I am who I am and cherish my alone time. Don’t we all relish that precious ‘me time’? The moments to reflect or to loosen up and unwind.
The peak of my day? Slipping into comfy attire, lounging on the sofa, and reading my favorite book in peace. Each morning, I navigate the chaos of the roads as I drop the kids off at school. Then, I find myself lost in time amid the day’s duties and madness, eagerly anticipating that night-time moment when my teens barricade themselves in their rooms—though they always seem to be hiding out there anyway. Before battling my pillows to find the perfect sleeping position, I love sitting in the lounge with a hot cup of tea, engrossed in my book.
Then, in swoops, my darling husband decided it was time for ‘quality time.’ He brings his iPad along to watch his series—which, frankly, I have zero interest in—and it is usually blared at volumes our next-door neighbors can undoubtedly hear. A second pair of headphones would make the best birthday gift, not because he doesn’t already own a pair, but to spare him any excuses.
So there we are: I’m trying to focus and savor my book while he obliviously enjoys his loud show right next to me—my request, ironically. “Why don’t we do something fun together?” Yes, but please, not tonight—or every night simultaneously.
What should I do? Have I resolved this domestic conundrum? Oh, surely, and certainly not. Will I ever find my moment of solitude? Indeed, one day or night—no one knows how or when. But this, my friends, is the mixed blessing of coupledom.
