My son Told me : More Protein!

May 23, 2025

If you’ve ever wondered why I take health advice from my son, let me tell you a story.

A few years ago, at the peak of his mischievous phase, my son suddenly declared war on artificial sugar. Not as a trend. Not to impress anyone. He actually sat down, did the research, and came to me with science-backed articles explaining how artificial sugar messes with your brain.

Then he made a bold decision. He quit eating anything that came in a box with a barcode and an expiry date. He was 14.

Since then, he’s become a healthy-eating, protein-loving, gym-conquering machine. I’ve doubted at times whether he even shares our DNA. His willpower? Impressive. His stubbornness? Only admirable when it comes to nutrition—don’t get me started on arguments.

“Mama, You Need More Protein” That’s what he told me recently.

And like any mother who loves her child and fears looking flabby in sleeveless tops, I listened. I started reading up on protein and why it’s so important, especially as we get older.

According to EatingWell.com, protein is in every single cell in the human body. It’s essential for keeping our bones strong, muscles intact, tissues functioning, and immunity on point.

How Much Protein Do We Actually Need?

The daily recommended amount for adults is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. But if you’re doing strength training or any kind of regular workout, that number jumps to 1.2–1.5 grams per kilo.

Now, throw aging and hormone changes into the mix, especially the lovely phenomenon known as menopause—and your protein needs become even more critical. As estrogen takes a well-deserved vacation, our muscle mass starts to say its goodbyes faster than we can say, “Where did I put my glasses?”

(Side note: mine were in the fridge. Then the purse. And once, shockingly, in my hand.)

The Menopause Metabolism Mess

Here’s the reality: once menopause kicks in, your metabolism turns into a moody teenager who never cleans up after itself. Gaining weight becomes suspiciously easy, and losing it? That feels like solving a Rubik’s cube while blindfolded.

But protein can help. It:

  • Preserves muscle mass
  • Strengthens bones
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Supports the immune system
  • Reduces hunger and helps regulate appetite
  • Basically, it becomes your best friend during the time your body starts acting like your worst roommate.

The Challenge I’m Taking On

So, I’m on a mission. I’m adding protein to every breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I’m lifting more than just shopping bags. And I’m taking my son’s advice seriously, because frankly, he’s been right before.

Sometimes, when your metabolism is acting like a hormonal teenager, it’s smart to listen to the actual teenager who figured it out first.
